The Return of Arinzo

A Comeback Built on Nostalgia and Expectation

Thirteen years after Arinzo (2013), The Return of Arinzo arrives with the weight of nostalgia and the promise of a deeper, more evolved story. Directed and produced by Iyabo Ojo, the film attempts to resurrect a notorious figure and expand her story into a broader narrative of revenge, secrets, and consequence. On paper, it is a compelling idea, sequels, when done right, have the power to deepen mythology, revisit emotional stakes, and reward long-time audiences. However, this film quickly reveals the difficulty of revisiting a story that was never originally designed to continue. While the ambition is clear and even admirable, the execution struggles to justify its return, leaving the sequel feeling more like an extension than an evolution.

Performances That Hold the Film Together

Where The Return of Arinzo finds its footing is in select performances. Mercy Aigbe, Funke Akindele, and Bimbo Akintola bring a level of professionalism and presence that the film desperately needs. Their performances feel grounded, intentional, and emotionally aware, offering moments that briefly elevate the material. The Tanzanian actress who played Arinzo’s daughter, also adds a refreshing layer to the film, bringing a sense of cultural texture that stands out, even if the narrative doesn’t fully utilize it.

However, this strength is not consistent across the board. The film suffers from uneven casting choices, where certain performances feel underdeveloped or simply unnecessary. It becomes increasingly clear that some roles were included more out of proximity than purpose. Performances from characters like Chioma Good Hair fall flat, lacking emotional depth and conviction, while others struggle to find any real footing within the story. In contrast, Enioluwa delivers a fairly decent performance, showing some promise within the chaos. Ultimately, the inconsistency in casting disrupts the film’s emotional balance, making it difficult to fully invest in its world.

Visual Effort Without Emotional Payoff

From a technical standpoint, the film shows glimpses of effort. Some moments of cinematography work, particularly in how scenes are framed and composed to create tension or spectacle. There is a noticeable attempt to elevate the visual quality beyond the first installment, and in that regard, the film does make progress. The VFX, while not groundbreaking, serves its intended purpose and does not entirely distract from the viewing experience.

There is also an intentional effort to connect the sequel back to the original film, particularly through narrative callbacks and the handling of Toyin Abraham’s character. This continuity is one of the film’s more thoughtful elements, showing that there was at least some consideration for the existing story world. However, these technical and structural efforts are not enough to compensate for the deeper issues within the film. Visual upgrades alone cannot replace strong storytelling, and in this case, the polish highlights the gaps rather than hides them.

A Story That Lacks Depth and Coherence

The biggest challenge with The Return of Arinzo lies in its storytelling. The idea of a sequel is only as strong as its ability to build on the foundation of the original, and here, that foundation feels shaky. The first Arinzo had clearer development and a stronger narrative arc, while this sequel feels like it is constantly trying to catch up with itself.

The plot revolves around Arinzo’s return for revenge, but the motivations and mechanisms driving this return feel underdeveloped. The film leans heavily on convenient plot devices rather than earned storytelling. Arinzo’s resurrection, her powers, and the abilities of her gang are introduced without sufficient explanation or depth. Bullets cannot penetrate them, she returns from death, yet the “how” and “why” are barely explored. The herbalist subplot, which serves as the bridge for her return, feels like a shortcut rather than a fully realized narrative device. As a result, what should have been a powerful reintroduction of a central character ends up feeling flat and emotionally unearned.

Distracting Subplots and Misplaced Focus

Another major issue is the film’s inability to maintain narrative focus. Several subplots feel unnecessary, existing more as filler than as meaningful contributions to the story. The studio scenes involving the musician and producer, for instance, add little to the central narrative and feel disconnected from the film’s core themes.

The international settings, Tanzania, Ghana, and Nigeria, also fall into this category. While visually appealing, they lack narrative purpose. Instead of enriching the story, they feel like opportunities taken for spectacle rather than substance. The geographical shifts do little to deepen the themes of revenge or consequence, making them more distracting than impactful. This lack of focus ultimately weakens the film, as it spreads itself too thin instead of committing fully to its central story.

What Could Have Made It Work

At its core, The Return of Arinzo is a film with potential that is undermined by its execution. Stronger writing would have made a significant difference, particularly in developing the mythology of Arinzo’s character and creating a more cohesive narrative. The film needed to take its time to build its world, establish clear rules, and give its story the depth it deserved.

More intentional casting would have also elevated the film. The contrast between the strong performances of actors like Funke Akindele and Mercy Aigbe and the weaker supporting cast highlights the importance of deliberate casting choices. Additionally, tighter direction and a more focused narrative would have helped eliminate unnecessary subplots and strengthen the film’s emotional core.

Ultimately, this feels like a project driven by ambition but lacking the discipline needed to fully realize it. Iyabo Ojo shows promise in her attempt to expand the story, but there is clear room for growth in her direction and storytelling approach.

Final Thoughts

The Return of Arinzo is a sequel that had the opportunity to build on a familiar story and deliver something bigger, deeper, and more impactful. Instead, it settles for moments rather than mastery. It is not without its highlights, but those highlights are not enough to carry the weight of the film. In the end, it serves as a reminder that bringing a story back to life requires more than intention, it requires structure, depth, and a clear understanding of why the story needs to be told again.
